SMART International Women’s Committee
The SMART Women’s Committee provides opportunities to network and participate in workshops and events that allow SMART sisters to develop skill sets and become more active as they take leadership roles within the union. The committee provides both online and offline resources and support for women members across North America, as well as for those considering a career in the sheet metal industry. BE4ALL Bathroom Kits
Through the ITI, BE4ALL distributed hundreds of bathroom kits to JATCs across the country – the result of apprentices pointing out the absence of menstrual products in local training facilities – with SMACNA dispensing a “how-to” guide demonstrating the ease of providing such products on the jobsite.

SUB Program – Maternity Benefits
Building Trades and Light Commercial Divisions ONLY
In addition to the medical benefits offered, there is a maternity benefit offered under the supplemental unemployment benefit (SUB) program. Maternity benefits are provided to members of Local 28 if you are unable to work because you are pregnant or on maternity leave. The benefit is in the amount of $300 per week for a maximum of 26 weeks. Members can apply for Maternity benefits by completing and submitting the Plan’s application, which includes a doctor’s certification of pregnancy. An application must be submitted every four weeks to continue receiving benefits. For more information, or assistance, please contact the Local 28 Funds Office. Contributions must be required for your membership classification in order to be eligible for this benefit. Please refer to the Welfare Fund summary plan description (SPD) below for more information.

Child Care
SMART (Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, and Transportation Workers) has announced a groundbreaking partnership with TOOTRiS, a leading provider of on-demand childcare services. This initiative makes SMART the first building trades union in the United States to offer nationwide childcare benefits to its members. Starting February 1, 2025, Local 28 will provide members with premium access to affordable childcare options. This benefit aims to support working families, especially apprentices and young families, by addressing the significant barrier of childcare costs and availability. For more information click HERE.
Domestic Violence
Domestic Violence is a complex issue affecting many. It is not limited to physical abuse; it can include emotional, financial, verbal, psychological, sexual, and social media-based abuse as well. There are national, state, and local resources—from legal advice to safe havens—available to help if you think you are a victim. Reach out to the Members Assistance Program for help navigating and finding the right resource(s).
Members Assistance Program (MAP)
The MAP helps members make use of all the resources available through the Local 28 Welfare Fund to solve problems in their jobs and lives. The MAP includes a Member Assistance Program Counselor, a Peer-to-Peer program, and Carelon Behavioral Health (formerly Beacon) Member Assistance Program.
