Welding
Local Union 28 Quick Certification for lapsed members to assist our members who let their AWS welding certification lapse, the training center will run a quick cert program as needed. Priority is based on first come/first serve from the welding list. The requirement is that the member was previously AWS certified in welding and that certification has lapsed.
You must show passing plates during the mock test practice.
All students must:
- Holder of a lapsed AWS welding certification within the last 3 years
- Recertification in the same WPS
- Minimum 2 nights of practice, initialed & approved by the instructors for mock test
- Orientation as required by AWS
- Valid F-60 & G-60 from FDNY
- Signed LU28 Welders agreement
- Valid SMART IA#
- Union dues paid to date of test
- All PPE, tools and power tools supplied by the test candidate
- Lateness or absence on the test date will result in a disqualification
- Incorrectly filled paperwork will be disqualified

One of the benefits of being a Local 28 member is our Welding Program. Our welders have an opportunity to train and certify at our American Welding Society (AWS) Accredited Testing Facility. We have on staff AWS certified Welding Educators and Welding Inspectors to train our members in any code or process of welding. For information on member training call (718) 297-5570.
Upcoming Night Classes for the FALL Semester 2025:
We are now accepting names for interested members for the Fall Classes. Once the classes are filled, the list will be deleted until the following Spring classes open for enrollment. Fall night classes will run from Mid-August to December. The Spring semester will run from January to June.
Some classes don’t have specific start dates yet.
Welding Stainless - Welding course February to April; Mondays & Wednesdays- Annually
Basic Welding - August 6th to October 15th; Mondays & Wednesdays
Structural Welding - October 20th to April 6th; Mondays & Wednesdays
Soldering - Starts September 15th
Architectural - January till March and another class will start April to June; Mondays & Wednesdays
Basic TAB - September 22nd to November 24th; Mondays & Wednesdays
Advanced TAB - After Basic TAB; expected in the Spring
TAB Tech - Written Exam prep after Advanced TAB Course; TBD
Auto Cad Advance - 1st week of September to 1st week of June - Annually
Local Law 52 Scaffold -Class offered every month
SST Refresher - Class offered every month
Basic and Beyond Class - TBD

Boost Your Skills with ITI Certification Courses
The International Training Institute, ITI, currently provides many courses for our members to take either online or in person. Local 28 encourages all of our members to take advantage of this opportunity. Successful completion of courses such as Fire and Fire Smoke Damper Technician, Smoke Control System Technicians (SCST) and Indoor Air Quality Technicians will lead to certifications. These certifications may lead to more work opportunities for our members as they will be in need by many of our contractors in the near future. In-Person 8-Hour Refresher Classes Available Monthly
This 8-Hour Refresher Course will refresh the Workers (10 hour) SST card once a worker is within one year of the expiration of their SST card. It will require two evening classes that will be approximately 4 1/2 hours each night. The courses that will be offered will be:
- SCA-211 4-Hour Supported Scaffold User and Refresher
- SST-305 4-Hour Fall Prevention.

Upcoming ITI Classes
ITI Fully Online Self-Paced Course for Revit
Students taking this class will need to have access to a computer with the Revit software on it or a computer capable of running the Revit program. If they do not already have a computer with Revit installed on it, ITI will help them to acquire a “Learn at Home” license of the software from Autodesk for free that they can install on a computer so they can complete the assignments.
