Stigma surrounding mental health disorders, as well as addiction, involve a negative attitude and often discrimination towards these distinguishing characteristics. We fear that which is different and uncomfortable and in turn create a bias in society that limits the ability for individuals to get necessary help. Stigma is one of the largest barriers to effective prevention, treatment and recovery efforts at the individual, family, community, and societal levels. The consequences of stigma can be devastating in someone’s journey to change but with support and understanding, we can challenge these outdated images of a person with a mental health disorder or addiction and pave a new pathway for growth. You are not alone!
